I consider myself to be very lucky indeed, especially when I see videos such as the one below. I dread to think how my life could’ve turned out had I been unlucky enough to have been born in what I would call less enlightened parts of the world, such as oh, I don’t know…how about Connecticut, home of Manifested Glory Ministries.
This local church group seems to think that homosexuality is a symptom of being possessed by demons, and they have a very friendly, non-scary way of exorcising said demons from the bodies of any men (or women) unfortunate enough to be part of their community.
When I see videos like this, it reminds me how frightening certain parts of the world can be—even places where one wouldn’t expect this to be the case, where there’s at least a veneer of civilization. But then as you dig deeper, you see that there are people living in these places whose minds inhabit a different era altogether. People whose belief systems and worldviews are so completely out of touch with reality that I have to stop and remind myself that, yes, we are indeed living in the 21st century; even if the video below seems to contradict this fact.
Personally, I don’t think it’s a pretty sight. You need a strong stomach to watch crazy stuff like this, or to hear the terrified wails of the young man on the floor whose only ’sin’ was to be gay. I wonder what his life is like amongst these people. Will he ever build up enough courage to break free and attempt to lead as normal a life as possible after being subjected to such treatment, or will he accept his lot and simply bend to their will? Could this be one of those occasions where a gay man eventually enters into a straight marriage, believing he’s been cured. How many heartaches and wasted lives would await the family of such a union, many years from now?
*Sigh* There are some amazingly stupid woo-woos out there. This one is a Church of England rector who wrote that homosexuals should be tattooed with health warnings on their backsides and chins, because homosexuality is:
clearly unnatural, a perversion and corruption of natural instincts and affections, and because it is a cause of fatal disease
Sodomy and fellatio seem to be the two issues that are so offensive to his delicate tastes. Apparently, the same stricture doesn’t apply to heterosexuals, even though the two forms of sexual intercourse are known to be practiced in that larger community.
Wow, way to go at discriminating against minorities. When was the last time something like this was suggested, I wonder? Imagine wanting to tattoo people based on their sexual preferences, or maybe even their religion?
I hope that if ever a young person finally makes the brave decision to come out and tell family and friends they’re gay, that they don’t suffer the misfortune of having someone like David Popescu as part of their support network. Mr. Popescu is running for political office in the 2008 Canadian federal election, and he recently gave a talk at a Sudbury high school where he frankly stated his views.
“A young man asked me what I think of homosexual marriages and I said I think homosexuals should be executed,” he said. “My whole reason for running is the Bible and the Bible couldn’t be more clear on that point.”
Interestingly, one commenter on the post at the Sudbury Star website did some research and wrote:
I wonder if he would also advocate death for women who wear pants (cross dressing - Deut 22:5), people who read their horoscopes, shave, or have tattoos (Lev 19:26-28). Rare steak (Lev 17:10), seafood (Lev 11:10), or a rack of ribs (Lev 11:7) should surely qualify for a dirt nap.
Being a useless sponge and parasite to his poor abused mother, I guess he needn’t worry about being stoned for charging or paying interest. (Psalm 15:1-5, Jeremiah 15:10), but he is surely guilty of wearing a cotton/polyester shirt (Leve 19:19), and thus perhaps should be hung from the highest tree.
I guess it escapes him that a man who beat his own mother is surely in contravention of one of those ten little rules.
In John 8:7, Christ said, “Let anyone among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone.”
“Since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)
I wonder how successful Mr. Popescu will be in his political career? As a voter, I’ll certainly keep an eye open for this monster should his aspirations ever gain him a higher profile on the public stage.
I was born in England, spent part of my childhood in Zambia and eventually immigrated to Canada. This is a blog about my life, my thoughts, current events, and the occasional post here and there about my cats. I think that covers it all.
